5 Tips for Surviving a Heatwave Without Air Conditioning

This week, Toronto was hit by a major heatwave. Temperatures have been as high as 32, but as every Canadian knows, it’s all about the “feels like”. Some days, it “felt like” 40.

We had an unseasonably cold summer, so we welcomed this beautiful, warm weather. My brother and sister-in-law went to the beach. Our church had a big barbecue event. Ice cream was on sale at the grocery store.

But Andrew and I don’t have air conditioning. So when it “feels like” 40 degrees, our tiny apartment feels like…

What can I say? With seminary tuition and other expenses, budgeting is part of what priestwife life in the city is all about. Plus, living without AC builds character (maybe?). Or maybe, at the very least, it makes you appreciate other blessings in your life.

Since our sweltering apartment is the top thing on my mind this week, just for fun, I thought I’d share our tips on how we survive a heatwave without air conditioning.

This may not be the richest, thought-provoking blog post, but hopefully it’s helpful to anyone in a similar, sweaty situation!

1. Drink lots of water

When your water intake has outpaced your sweat output and you finally feel the need to pee, you’ve won.

2. Take a cold shower

I mean cold, cold. That should help stave off the stickiness for a few hours. If you don’t feel like getting wet, then put a cold damp cloth on the back of your neck to bring down your body temperature.

3. Go swimming

Condo pool, apartment pool, public pool, neighbour’s pool. Whatever you can get.

4. Go to the movies

Or go to dinner. Or the arcade. Or Ikea. Anywhere where you can spend a few hours savouring that sweet, sweet AC.

5. Close the curtains

Why invite burning beams of sun into your apartment if you don’t have to? Light bulbs also add heat to your house – keep your lights off as much as possible after dark.

Hope these tips help you stay cool through this heat wave and others to come! Still desperate for reprieve from the heat?

More suggestions from Greatist. Or, get an air conditioner.

This post is hilarious. I remember living in Madrid during the summer without an air conditioner as well. One night it was so hot that we slept with wet towels on us! It wasn’t the most comfortable but at least we were able to fall asleep. haha!

I’m glad you liked the post and I can totally relate to your comment. I have tried a wet towel before! Thanks for adding that great tip!
